Introducing scenic spots
Futami Jozan Road (Futami park – Futami Tsuribashi suspension bridge – Kappabuchi water pool – Akaiwa no Kan mountain stream)

Popular scenic viewpoint

The Futami Jozan Road runs alongside the Toyohira River. It starts from Futami Park、which is home to Jozankei Onsen’s iconic king, Kappa Daio. Just upstream lies a natural trail sometimes referred to as a “healing corridor.” You can enjoy the exquisite beauty of its waterways and forests throughout the year, within just a 2.5km round trip. The route goes from the red Futami Tsuribashi suspension bridge, renowned for its view of the autumn leaves, to Kappabuchi Park, Ikoi Square, and onward through Shinsui Park to the Akaiwa-no-kan mountain stream.

The Futami Jozan Road brings visitors into contact with wide-ranging nature and landscapes, surrounded by a revitalizing sense of vibrancy that acts as a reminder of the wonders of life. Particularly striking is the variety of flowers found blooming around the footpath, and ensuring plenty of time to take in all the sights is highly recommended.

This trail through the Jozankei section of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park is a journey among valleys and gorges of unmatched beauty. The headwaters of the Toyohira River are surrounded by deep, rich forest and feature everything from rapids to stream pools and areas of still water that reflect the greenery and autumn leaves of the trees above. The character of the valleys and gorges seems to transform with the seasons and changes in light conditions, leading to endless surprises. Whenever you feel the need for a moment of enrichment, this paradise home to a rich tapestry of mountain waterways is always within easy reach, with wild flowers in bloom, birds in song, and wildlife running through the trees. Looking up from near the water’s surface offers a new perspective—a gateway to a world of new discoveries.

Peering into the river, you might be able to make out fish swimming freely through the water. Whether they be char or yamame trout, these beautiful fish need clean, cold freshwater to live, and it is thanks to the river’s majestic waters that these wondrous creatures can thrive. Simply standing by the river and taking in this sight is enough to give the sensation of cleansing one’s soul.

While the incredible kaleidoscope of autumn leaves is a definite highlight, the scenery on a clear winter day is also spectacular. The freshly-fallen snow shining in the morning light, with cotton-like piles covering the tree branches, makes for a scene encapsulating the joy of winter in Jozankei. Look to the left-hand bank of the Toyohira River and you are greeted with the sight of columnar and plate-like joints of andesite and Jozankei quartz porphyry, a type of rock named after Jozankei itself.

The Futami Jozan Road leads beyond Ikoi Square to Shinsui Park. Head a little further and you’ll reach an out-of-the-way spot known as the Akaiwa-no-kan mountain stream. This valley couldn’t be better as a place to take a breather. Even the sudden rustling and other natural sounds of the forest only serve to enhance the sense of serenity. As a place to relax mind and body, Akaiwa-no-kan is an ideal complement to the hot springs, a turning point befitting a path known as a “healing corridor” and highly recommended for any keen walkers out there.
