Momiji Bridge crosses the Otarunai River as it flows down to Jozankei Dam Karyuenchi Park. The river crashes violently into the rocks, and there is a chill in the air all year round. As the name of the bridge suggests, the views of the leaves in autumn here are simply stunning. The beguiling splash of the mountain stream and the gorgeous tinge of the leaves in fall mean that Momiji Bridge and Shigure Bridge are perfect but little-known spots for seeing the autumn leaves.
The maple trees are a key feature of this area and are renowned for their beautiful autumnal leaves. They make this bridge a place you will definitely want to visit in autumn, but they are not the only reason. Red, yellow, orange, brown: the colors vary, depending on the trees and the leaves. The leaves blend together, but surprisingly you can still distinguish the different colors.
Also, the snowy landscape in winter has a quiet dignity that is hard to forget. When the snow falls, even the strong river current is subdued, flowing gently, almost musically, as if playing a lullaby. Perhaps it’s because of the remoteness of the area, but this is a great place to see wildlife, such as sika deer and red foxes. Deer like to gather here, especially in winter – you can see 20 to 30 of them together in a group at any one time.
