Yasou Ritto
A Hidden Gem, Where Time and Nature Flow as One.
Tucked away in a serene forest beside the gentle flow of a river, Yasou Ritto offers a one-of-a-kind escape into nature, history, and refined comfort. This exclusive retreat welcomes just one group per day, ensuring complete privacy and tranquility.
Originally designed by Yoshiya Tanoue, a renowned architect and protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, this red-roofed residence is a masterpiece of Japanese modernist design. Tanoue’s vision, deeply rooted in Hokkaido’s natural and cultural landscape, is still present throughout the house.
Once home to the Ōba family, who operated a lumber mill here since the Meiji era, the house tells a story of craftsmanship and legacy. Timber from the surrounding forests once traveled by the historic Jōzankei Railway to help build the city of Sapporo. Today, those same forests embrace the home, offering a timeless sense of place.
Constructed over 60 years ago using premium Hokkaido wood, Yasou Ritto has been thoughtfully restored to blend historic charm with luxurious modern amenities. It’s a space where heritage and hospitality meet, perfect for travelers seeking something truly special.
The name Ritto (刂), drawn from the kanji for “sword,” reflects a philosophy of simplicity; cutting away the excess to reveal pure, essential beauty. Here, space, silence, and nature become the ultimate luxuries.
Step outside and explore the untouched beauty of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. In every season, the landscape transforms: the rush of spring meltwaters, dappled summer light, vibrant autumn foliage, and the quiet magic of winter snow. Each visit leaves behind unforgettable memories.
