In the final stages of the Edo period,
\napproximately 150 years ago,
\nan ascetic monk, Miizumi Jozan, guided by the Ainu,
\nencountered the source of the hot spring. <\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n

After enduring the harsh natural environment
\nand overcoming many difficulties,
\nJozan laid the foundations for the hot spring.
\nHe then named this place \u2018Jozankei.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n

As time passed,
\nit became one of
\nHokkaido’s most famous hot-spring resorts.
\nThanks to the scalding hot water
\nthat gushes from its springs,
\nJozankei Onsen continues to
\ngently heal \u2013 both the minds and bodies \u2013
\nof those who bathe there.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n\n\n\n

Over the past 100 years or so, since the opening of the Jozankei-Shiroishi railroad in 1918, the face of Jozankei has changed dramatically. The number of users plummeted immediately after the war. The hot-spring resort then developed along with Sapporo’s rapid post-war growth.
