    定山渓温泉には「かっぱ伝説」があり、「かっぱ」は定山渓のマスコットになっています。「かっぱ」にちなんで、 「かっぱロード」や「かっぱ」のデザインの水飲み場まであります。 豊平川にかかる月見橋の欄干、そこにも透かし模様の「かっぱ」がいるのをご存知でした? 温泉街のいたる所で見られるメルヘンかっぱ像は、札幌市民から募集したアイデアをもとに、道内外の彫刻家によって制作されました。 散策の途中で、どんな「かっぱ」に出会えるかな… かっぱ淵の由来 豊平川は、明治42年銚子の口発電所のダムが出来るまでは、この奥から胴木(柾の原木)を流送する程、流れも多く、 至るところの深淵には大きな川魚類が沢山棲息していた。 その頃道路工事に従事していた青年、瀬山某がこの淵で魚取りしていた時、 足すべらせた訳でもないのに、急に引込まれるように、川底に沈んでいった。 これを附近にいて目撃していた胴木流送中の人達がすぐに飛込んだが、 淵が深くて救助する事が出来なかったばかりでなく、この青年の姿は遂に発見する事なく日が過ぎた。 そして一年、一周忌の当夜、件の青年が故郷の父の夢枕に立って、 「私は今かっぱの妻と子供と一緒に幸せに暮らしている」と語った。 部落きっての美男子だったこの青年、ここに住んでいるかっぱに魅入られたのだろう………… ということで、以来ここをかっぱの淵と称するようになったが、その後は此処で遭難する者は全く無くなったという。
